Moon Void of Course

age: 39

gender: female

Please explain a little about the moon void-of-course position.

I have a friend who died within an hour of moon v/c (before the moon entered its next sign) and I guess that perhaps it helped him pass through to the other side without strong emotional pulls keeping him connected back to this side, but I'm not sure and am very interested in what you could explain about the moon void-of-course position. Thank you!

Technicalities aside...the Moon is Void of Course after making it's last major aspect to any planet and before it enters the next sign. That can last from minutes to many hours and has a significance that varies according to each astrologer and each individual. Astrologic symbols are precisely that...Symbols...not signs. The distinction is important. Jung explains that a symbol is an image which stands for something about which we cannot know in its entirety. A sign is simply an image of something that is completely known. A Full Stop Sign at an intersection may have it's own metaphoric depths (according to those of us with an overactive Mercury)...but it's meant to be taken as a completely well defined sign that has no mystery contained within it. Astrologic symbols on the other hand are full of possibilities, depth and mystery. That's why the cookbook approach to astrology, while it has its practical uses, is inherently limited. A symbol is something that's full of juice and life. A cookbook can't possibly take all of the possibilities into account...and usually ends up drying things out without giving you any really good flavor.

As far as the Void of Course goes...my own feeling about such symbolism concerns the periodic need for Introspection and the idea of Zen action / non-action. Not acting in the usual Yang way is what I like to feel is the idea. That means, naturally...an intensification of Yin sensibility and includes the act of meditation. Most especially that means being receptive and what a Westerner might call being passive. Naturally that's a dangerous thing, given the state of our culture...but the generic idea prevailing is that trying to get anything accomplished during a Lunar Void of Course ends in frustration and wasted energy. The implication is that the Moon is at fault. The Eastern view would simply be that trying to be Yang at that time is foolish.

I very much like your own take on the significance of the Void of Course Moon. By saying you're not sure I realize that you're only being honest...but I believe that your Intuition of the significance for your friend was very much correct.

On the Cusp

age: 26

gender: female

Hi, Can you answer something for me? I was born 22 of November 1972 at 12 noon in Melbourne Victoria Australia and don't know if I'm a Scorpio or Saggitarius as I was born on a cusp and some say one some say the other. Can you resolve my dilema?

My information about the cusp comes from an article written by Steven Forrest, author of my favorite Astrology text "The Inner Sky".

The disk of the Sun is approximately 1/2 degree wide. The Sun's position at the time of birth indicates where the center of the disk is located. If you are born with the Sun between 29 degrees 45 minutes of a sign and 00 degrees 15 minutes of the next sign, the disk of the Sun will be on the cusp and will indicate a mixture of signs.

Your chart shows an interesting mixture of Sagittarius and Scorpio. Pluto, the co-ruler of Scorpio is in the natural house of Scorpio while Mars, the other co-ruler is in it's natural sign of Scorpio but is placed in the natural house of Sagittarius. I can't help feeling that your artistic talents are meant to be inspired from a deep and somewhat Darkly Intense place...but that you're meant to be something of a guide or teacher with the capacity to show that those places are not to be avoided. That it's worth the risk of venturing into those depths because of the enormous treasures you've been able to find there. Like a true teacher you encourage others with your constructive criticism instead of simply criticizing to demonstrate your knowledge, boost your self-esteem and act out your impatience.

Of course there's much more in your chart to speak of...but I think you already know that your complexity is a gift and not a complication.
